INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL
The 2nd round of the County Intermediate Football Championship saw us face off against our oldest rivals, Fethard, in Clonmel Sportsfield. The game took plenty of twists and turns throughout and certainly was nail biting in the finish although we came out on top. We started brightly with Michael Meaney opening his and Grangemockler’s account with a bursting run through the middle kicking into a strong wind. Mikey Lyons, took the game to Fethard from the off kicking two points shortly after to go three ahead. Fethard responded to kick their first point from a 45 with a slight breeze assisting the centre forward. We looked like we meant business early on kicking two more scores after the keeper denied a goal chance for Alex Millea with the resulting score popping over the bar. Mikey again added from play to keep four points between the sides. We were a little bit fortunate with our 7th score as Paudi O’Shea’s strike looked to be dropping short but managed to bounce over the bar to keep four between the sides. Mikey Lyons added his 4th from a free on the 20 minute mark but this was our last score of the half. Fethard start using the breeze to their advantage and kicked 4 unanswered points to leave one point between the sides at the break. Fethard took the game to us in the second half and after some sloppy shooting we dropped some shots short which helped Fethard build from the back. This lead to the first goal of the game with a fortunate bounce that just bet the onrushing James Wallace to put Fethard 2 ahead. Paudi O’Shea settled us back down kicking a score off his left after patient build up while Leon Kennedy fired over after we overturned the resulting kick out to pull us back level 1-7 to 0-10. Paudi again was at the heart of the attack taking the ball from Sean Daly, who broke two tacklers, to fire over and regain the lead before finishing off another attack to bring his tally to 0-4. Fethard responded with a point but Sean O’Meara capitalised shortly after kicking his first and Grangemocklers 13th point. We were caught napping shortly after when Fethard got an overlap and broke trhough the defence to score their 2nd goal of the day. We had a real battle on our hands in Clonmel. The scoreline was 2-8 to 0-13. This was to be Fethards last score of the game which in the meantime saw us kick 3 more points through Mark O’Meara, and two Mikey Lyons frees. We now progress to the county quarter final with one group game against Fr. Sheehy’s remaining.
Scorers: Mikey Lyons (0-6, 3f), Paudi O’Shea (0-4), Alex Millea (0-2), Michael Meaney (0-1), Leon Kennedy (0-1), Sean O’Meara (0-1), Mark O’Meara (0-1)
